An earthquake of magnitude 8.2 hit the Chile coast last week and brought about landslides and a significant tsunami. A week before that, many earthquakes of smaller magnitude had hit the Southern California. The immense earthquake that struck Japan in March, 2011 did not just cause a nuclear plant meltdown but the satellites were also knocked out of their orbits.

This great earthquake and its damage has resulted in an increasing realization that it is important to be ready for huge earthquakes in spite of their unpredictability. In order to defend the important infrastructure in areas liable to such earthquakes, the French scientists are working to build something similar to a sound shield which can redirect the energy of earthquake somewhere else.

Some scientists are working on forecasting earthquakes; even then they have been able to predict earthquakes only minutes before the disaster. The French scientists are looking to lessen the destruction caused by such earthquakes, particularly to the buildings that are not used to such intense shaking, for example power plants. These scientists doubted if the sound waves also behave like cloaking techniques that bend some wavelengths of light around a target to make them invisible. The plan is to build a series of minor holes around the city susceptible to earthquakes that vibrate at the same frequencies as the earthquakes and hence, counterbalances the vibrations and saves the area inside the holes. The scientist arranged a demonstration with the help of sound waves in soil that worked; the energy from their computer-generated earthquake was refracted by the sound waves from a particular target area.

India has registered most content censorship requests on Facebook, according to the social network’s second transparency report on government requests between July and December 2013. The findings of the reports highlight that while US reported most requests for user accounts, India stood second on the list in terms of requests made to get access to user accounts.

The report suggests that the Indian government made a total of 3,598 requests for user data, and 4,711 requests for user accounts references. Out of the total, Facebook produced data for 53.66 percent of requests. The noticeable part of the finding however is that India registered 4,765 requests for content restriction, which were reported primarily by law enforcement officials as well as India’s Computer Emergency Response Team under the local laws for religion or state.

In terms of other countries’ data, like earlier this time as well the US made maximum 12,598 user data requests and asked for more than 18,715 user accounts information. UK stood third, with a total of 1,906 requests for user data and 2,277 requests for user accounts references. Out of all, Facebook gave out data for 81.02 percent of requests made by the US, and 71.30 percent of the requests by UK.

Imagine if smartphones are infected to the same extent as personal computers. The resulting damage would be much more severe. In a first, Finnish researchers have measured smartphone malware infection rates and explored ways to identify infection with previously unknown malware. The team investigating the true extent of malware infection in Android devices has discovered that infection rates in Android devices at around 0.25 percent are significantly higher than the previous independent estimate.

The project collected data from over 50,000 devices during a seven-month period.

The researchers also speculated that smartphones infected with malicious apps may have other, benign apps in common, possibly because the users purchase them all from the same app market.

The researchers investigated if it is possible to develop a technique to identify devices infected with previously unknown malware.

“In our dataset, this approach is up to five times more likely to identify infected devices than by choosing devices at random,” said Hien Truong from University of Helsinki.

Earlier estimates about malware infection rates vary greatly ranging from more than 4 percent of Android devices to less than 0.0009 percent of smartphones in the US.

University of Helsinki researchers are working on the the ‘Malware Insights’ project at the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Secure Computing (ICRI-SC) and would present their paper at this year’s World Wide Web conference.

Nokia announced a new phone in its affordable, entry-level mobile phone series, the Nokia 225. At 10.4mm thin and priced at approximately Rs 3,200, Nokia says it is its slimmest and affordable Internet connected phone. Running on Series 30 operating system, the Nokia 225 might not be your typical smartphone but Nokia says users will be able to browse the Internet and it will also come preloaded with Facebook and Twitter apps.

Though specifications are sketchy at best right now, the Nokia 225 features a 2.8-inch QVGA display, a 2-megapixel rear camera, a microSD card slot and a battery that can last up to 36 days in single-SIM and 27 days in dual-SIM variant in standby mode. Its 1,200mAh battery can work as a music player for 51 hours on the trot or up to 21 hours of talk time.

The Nokia 225 will go on sale later this quarter and will be available in five colors – black, white, green, red and yellow – for approximately Euro 39 or Rs 3,200. It also features a splash proof keypad. However, what we are most interested in knowing is the kind of 3G speed the Nokia 225 will support. Towards the end of last year, Gionee launched the Elife E7 mini alongside the Elife E7, though it has yet to make the device available in India. Now though, the mini device is available online on Indian e-commerce websites for Rs 19,500, which is Rs 500 more than the official launch price.

The two talking points on the Elife E7 mini are the processor and the camera. It is powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor clocked at 1.7GHz and paired with 1GB of RAM. On the photography front, instead of two cameras it has a 13-megapixel camera on a swivel, which can be rotated to click proper photos as well as selfies.

The smartphone also features a 4.7-inch 720p display, 16GB of internal storage, a 2,100mAh battery and connectivity options like dual-SIM card slots, 3G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. On the software front, it runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean wrapped under Gionee’s Amigo UI.

iPhone 6 – the new smartphone to be released by Apple

The market is ablaze with the rumors and speculations about the next generation of Apple’s smartphone ; Iphone 6. It seems it will be presented in September, 2014. Apple will introduce new phones in two versions, one with a 4.7 inch screen and the other with a 5.5 inch screen.

The screen of the phones will probably be made of sapphire crystal, a material resistant to scratches and is almost as durable as a diamond. It will be seamlessly blended with thin aluminum body. The devices will definitely be lighter and thinner than the previous but improved with a large screen with high resolutions and it will be resistant to scratches.

Also, as per our information goes, special focus is being devoted to new camera technology with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). The Smartphone will have higher specifications of FaceTime camera. The main camera will be significantly improved with resolution of 10 megapixels. iPhone 6 cameras will have refocused capable light field camera. This technology works by capturing light fields, rather than rendering 2D capture. The result is likely to be stunning with a photo which is no longer limited to a fixed frame capturing, but here, you can select a part of the photo to completely refocus the image.

And despite phone having a larger screen , the phone will become lighter than even a 4 – inch iPhone 5S. Last but not the least, the new iPhone will be driven by new iOS 8.0 platform.
