Confusing hashtags? Let Twitter break them down for you

Confusing hashtags? Let Twitter break them down for you
Twitter gives you the freedom to add a hashtag to any word you can think of. Some are self-explanatory, while some are best understood only by the one who tweets it. This could explain why Twitter is testing a feature that could help users understand the meaning behind a tag.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, searches for different hashtags will now display an explanation in addition to tweets associated with the hashtag. The new feature has been rolled out in the latest update of the iPhone Twitter app. Desktop and Android users are yet to receive the update. With this a regular hashtag will have a legend explaining its origins or the reason behind it. For example, #tbt  will bring out Throwback Thursday, #smh Shaking My Head and #oitnb  points out the TV series “Orange Is The New Black”.
Twitter has not officially announced the update, however, the micro-blogging website has been working on its interface for quite some time now. A series of revamping started after Twitter’s growth in terms of users took a beating in late 2013. Since then, it’s been trying hard to get first-time users make use of its platform by giving prominent placement to photographs and creating a simplified the sign-up process.
Hashtags work similar to search keywords and are useful for finding what’s trending on the web. With descriptors for popular hashtags, newbies can also be in the know and make sure they are not left scratching their heads trying to figure out what the buzz is about.

Line offers free talk time worth Rs 50 to all its India users

Line offers free talk time worth Rs 50 to all its India users
Japan-based messaging app Line is offering free talktime worth Rs 50 to all its users in India, for downloading and sharing stickers.
So how can users redeem the offer? Users need to download Line Characters in the Love sticker pack and send them to five Line friends. Once you do that, you will receive a link to redeem talktime worth Rs 50. Do note that taxes are involved, so the actual talktime you’ll get might be less than Rs 50.  The offer is available for all prepaid and post-paid users on all iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices, with no restriction on the telecom service provider.
Daman Soni, Head of India Business Development, Line, said in a press statement,“Line is well on its way to becoming the most preferred social communications application in India. The download numbers are on a constant upsurge and are engaging with a far greater number of users now.”
The company had recently roped in Katrina Kaif as its brand ambassador and had partnered with Sony to ensure that the app would come pre-installed on Xperia smartphones such as Xperia Z1 and Xperia C.
Line was launched in India in July 2013 and in October 2013, the company announced that is has nearly 10 million users in the country. Currently the company says it has close to 17 millions users in India.
Sticker packs have always been the key feature on Line. The stickers include a range of its own original characters as well as some famous ones like Disney, Hello Kitty and even Iron Man. This feature, claims the company, is behind the app’s exponential growth in Asian countries.
Stickers or no stickers, Line isn’t the only mobile messaging app that is vying for market share in India. WhatsApp, WeChat, home-grown app Hike, Facebook Messenger and BBM are some of the key competitors and more are being added by the day. The Rs 50 talk time is definitely an interesting offer that might help the app get some new users in India.

World’s fastest 43Tbps Internet connection can let you download 1GB in 0.2 milliseconds

World’s fastest 43Tbps Internet connection can let you download 1GB in 0.2 milliseconds
Imagine downloading a 1GB movie in about 0.2 milliseconds. That could very well be a possibility after a team of researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), were able to transmit 43 terabits (Tb) per second over a single optical fiber with just one laser transmitter.
To give you a better idea of the speeds here, 43Tbps equals a transfer rate of around 5.4 TB per second, somewhere around 5,300 GBs. We won’t fault you for reading that sentence twice. In contrast, the previous record was 26 terabits per second set by Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2011.
The important thing to note here is that DTU managed to break the record over a single optical fiber with one laser transmitter. Theoretically, it’s possible to achieve speeds way in excess of DTU’s record, but that flies in the face of Internet infrastructure, which is primarily built around a single-laser single-fiber setup.
DTU did bend some of the rules, using a multi-core fiber while still only using a single laser. The multiple individual channels in a multi-core fiber can carry their own optical signal. DTU used a seven-core fiber line, produced by Japanese telecom giant NTT. In fact, NTT is going ahead with commercial deployment of said multi-core fiber in Japan. Currently, the fastest commercial network speed maxes out at just 100Gbps, so if DTU’s technique is indeed commercialised, we could have considerably faster Internet speeds in the near future. Large-scale adoption will be glacial, so it will be a while before 43Tbps lines become commonplace.

Minimum broadband speed raised to 512 kbps, notifies Trai

Minimum broadband speed raised to 512 kbps, notifies Trai
Telecom sector regulator Trai has notified that the minimum broadband speed has been raised to 512 kilo bytes per second (kbps) from the earlier 256 kbps.
The amendment has been made to the Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal Regulations, 2012 and the regulations will be called the Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal (Third Amendment) Regulations, 2014, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said in a notification.
Accordingly, the new definition of broadband is “a data connection that is able to support interactive services including internet access and has the capability of minimum download speed of 512 kbps to an individual subscriber from the point of presence (POP) of the service provider intending to provide broadband service”.
The regulations will come into force after publication in the official gazette, it added. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had revised the broadband speed in consonance of the National Telecom Policy 2012 and Trai recommendations, the regulator said.
The earlier minimum broadband speed of 256 kbps was as per the Broadband Policy 2004.
According to National Telecom Policy 2012, the government aims to raise the broadband download speed of to 512 kbps from 256 kbps and subsequently to 2 Mbps by 2015.
According to Trai data, total broadband subscribers in the country rose by 5.82 per cent to 65.33 million at the end of May 2014 from 61.74 million at the end of April 2014.
While wired broadband subscribers stood at 14.95 million as of May this year, mobile device users (phones and dongles) were 49.97 million and the fixed wireless (Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, Point-to-Point, Radio and VSAT) subscribers stood at 0.41 million for the same period.

Facebook back online after overnight outage in India, other countries

Facebook back online after overnight outage in India, other countries
Facebook said service to the world’s largest online social network was fully restored on Friday, following a widespread outage that affected users in multiple countries.
“Earlier this morning, some people had trouble accessing Facebook for a short time. We quickly investigated and have fully restored service for everyone. We’re sorry for the inconvenience,” Facebook said in an emailed statement.
Facebook, which has 1.32 billion monthly users, is still investigating the incident, but all signs suggest a “technical” failure rather than any suspicious activity, said a person familiar with the matter who requested anonymity because the probe is private.
Some visitors to the site on Friday were greeted with a message that read “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”
It was not immediately clear how widespread the disruption was, though Reuters was aware of users having trouble accessing the site in the United States, Chile and India.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to launch on Sep 3: Here’s what to expect

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to launch on Sep 3: Here’s what to expect
Samsung’s presence at IFA guarantees one thing, at least based on their past experience at the event. In all likelihood, Berlin will be where Samsung will unveil the much-anticipated Galaxy Note 4. And according to a report in Korea Times, the date of the announced will be September 3 before IFA even kicks off.
That date is tantalising coming so close to the iPhone 6 launch, which is rumoured to happen on September 12. In fact, we can expect Samsung to bring in two new phones, as teased by a company executive this week. However, not both phones will arrive at the same time. And the Note 4 looks like the one which will have a bigger stage for itself.
This year, more than ever, the Note series represents Samsung’s make-or-break chance to turn around the flagging sales run, especially in the high-end category. Samsung needs a revenue boost and a high-end device like the Note 4 could just be the shot in the arm, if the rumours are any indication of its features.
We can expect Samsung to throw in all its high-end technology into the phone. “Samsung will hold an event to announce the Note 4 on Sept. 3, just few days before this year’s IFA trade fair in Berlin, Germany Europe’s biggest technology exhibition,” the report said.
Samsung has launched the Galaxy Note series at or around IFA on all three occasions in the past. The rumoured specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 tell a very interesting story and suggest Samsung may be pushing further into the health and fitness territory. For one, the Note 4 is said to come with an ultraviolet sensor, which can measure UV radiation and alert users about possible precautions they need to take through the S Health app.
Another rumour suggests the Note 4 will have a rumoured eye scanner. Other interesting APKs that were leaked in the past include SmartSelfShot, which could be a new method for taking selfies, as well as an updated version of S Health. A fingerprint scanner APK is also seen, but that was present on last year’s Note 3 leaks also, even though the device didn’t have a scanner. However, given that Samsung put a fingerprint scanner on its excellent Tab S range, we can expect one on the Note 4 too.
One of the first rumours about the Note 4 earlier this year had pointed towards a 2k display, something we were expecting to come with the Galaxy S5. The report also spoke about water-proof abilities and a20.1MP sensor for the Note 4. One of the most consistent rumours is about Samsung’s use of a bent or flexible display in the Note 4, thanks to technology developed under the Yuom project. There were hints about support for Samsung’s upcoming Gear VR headset, which could be announced at IFA too.
There are quite a few interesting new features in the Note 4, at least so far based on speculation. However, these may or may not make the cut when it comes to the final product. Just like Apple, Samsung needs a game-changing feature like Apple brought in last year with TouchID and a flexible or bent display, if used well, could be just that.
On the processing speed front, the device is speculated to pack in an octa-core Exynos CPU or a Snapdragon 800-series SoC, coupled with 4GB RAM. The company might as well build both variants, and as seen earlier. Speculation is that the Note 4 will have global LTE coverage. The rumoured feature list also includes 128GB onboard storage, though that seems like a long shot at the moment, a new handwriting-recognition technology for unlocking the device and a battery ranging between 3600mAh and 3800mAh, which would give it enough power to last the day.
