Advancements
in technology affect various aspects of our lives, in both positive and
negative ways. New survey results, however, show who's witnessing
tech's drawbacks the most — Internet users in countries with developed
economies.
According
to a new report Microsoft released last week ahead of the World
Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Internet users in developing
countries have a more positive view on the impact of technology. On the
other hand, users in developed countries say technology has decreased
trust in the media and contributed to declines in fitness, among other
disadvantages.
The
survey also shows 60% of respondents in developing countries feel
personal technology has had a positive impact on social bonds, while
only 36% of respondents in developed countries said the same. And while
71% of people in developing countries feel tech can aid in productivity,
only 54% of people in developed countries agree.
Microsoft
surveyed Internet users in five developed countries (France, Germany,
Japan, South Korea and the United States) and seven developing countries
(Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Russia, South Africa and Turkey). In
11 of the 12 participating countries — India being the only exception —
respondents say technology’s effect on privacy has been mostly negative.
The
following chart, created by statistics portal Statista, shows how
people in developing and developed countries differ in outlooks toward
technology's impact on business, productivity, social bonds, fitness,
trust in media and privacy.
