From
Jeopardy contestant and customer-service agent to master chef, IBM's
Watson supercomputer has taken on a number of roles in the past few
years.
Now,
IBM is partnering with United Services Automobile Association to put
the world's most famous supercomputer to a new use: helping members of
the military prepare for civilian life.
USAA,
which provides financial services to military personnel and their
families, is rolling out "Ask Watson," an online tool that will help
members get answers to questions about how they can prepare for life
outside the military.
To
enable the military-specific queries, IBM Watson analyzed more than
3,000 documents on topics related to military transitions. USAA members
will be able to log on to the association's website, and ask Watson
about issues related to returning to civilian life, including resume
writing, and how to take advantage of the G.I. Bill.
Although
"Ask Watson" has been available to IBM's enterprise customers since
last year, this is the first time the company is making it available to
consumers.
“Putting
Watson into the hands of consumers is a critical milestone toward
improving how we work and live," Mike Rhodin, senior vice-president of
IBM Watson Group, said in a statement. “USAA’s innovative application is
a prime example of how Watson's cognitive intellect has the potential
to empower individuals and organizations. We believe this new service
can help men and women who served their country gain timely and relevant
insights into the steps they need to successfully move to civilian
life."
