Apple
is known for good cameras inside its iPhones but the sensors are
supplied by Sony. It was about time that Apple would have its own
in-house camera hardware as well. To make that a reality, Apple has
acquired an Israel-based camera technology company called LinX
Computational Imaging Limited.
According
to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the Israeli company specialises
in small camera modules which can be implemented in smartphone cameras.
On the company website, you can see multi-lens modules which can be
used in 2D as well as 3D capture.
LinX
says that its cameras are also capable of a variety of special effects
such as the refocussing an image after the fact, measurement of the true
dimensions of objects, 3D object modelling and real-time background
replacement in video calls.
From
the pictures, the camera tech looks quite similar to the du0-camera
seen on the HTC One M8/M9 as well as the Huawei Honor 6 Plus.
It
wouldn’t be surprising to see the next iPhone with a dual-lens camera
just like the HTC and Huawei variants. Knowing Apple, it might just
introduce a whole new term for this existing technology.
