With
Foxconn’s plans to invest in three new facilities in India, it is now
being speculated that Apple’s next iPhone could be made in India.
According
to The Economic Times, Foxconn ‘is looking’ to invest into three new
facilities here that will be based in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra
Pradesh. Two of these facilities are dedicated to manufacturing while
the third is aimed at establishing a R&D centre.
Besides,
Foxconn has reportedly hired a senior Nokia executive, Josh Foulger,
who has experience in establishing the Nokia plant in Chennai. Apple is
rumoured to be working on iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus phablet, along
with affordable iPhone 6C as part of the 2015 refresh cycle.
The
possibility of Apple to start manufacturing in India is also fuelled by
the recent reports that highlight how Communications and IT Minister
Ravi Shankar Prasad urged Apple to open a research and development
(R&D) facility in India when he met Apple’s Head Compliance EMEIA
region John Reynolds in New Delhi.
With
the government’s new ‘Make in India’ initiative, we’ve seen several
companies now readying to start manufacturing here. If things go
according to plan, this will be Foxconn’s second coming, as it had a
subsidiary which made parts for the Nokia plant in Chennai. There were
three Foxconn plants on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway which had closed
down in February, laying off thousands of employees.
For now, let’s take this news with a pinch of salt.
