Instagram updates guidelines; bans bare butts but allows breastfeeding photos
Popular photo and video sharing app Instagram has released a strong and significant community guidelines to clarify some rules and regulations and also give users a deeper insight on how it channelises content on its site.
Instagram states that they want to ‘continue to be an authentic and safe place for inspiration and expression’. A report by Mashable points out that Instagram, has had a particularly hard time dealing with female nudity. As the old guidelines asked users to refrain from posting any form of nudity on the site, the new guidelines allow a little more flexibility.
In conversation with Wall Street Journal, Director of Public Policy for Instagram Nicky Jackson Colaco said, “In the old guidelines, we would say ‘don’t be mean’. Now we’re actively saying you can’t harass people. The language is just stronger.”
Some of the main controversial points cleared in the new regulation include: Sharing photos or videos which are only taken by the user or has the right to share. Instagram recommends not to not post anything which has been copied or collected from the Internet or does not have the right to post. Instagram also cleared the air about posting nude images to the site.
Users are not allowed to post “pictures or videos nor digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, close-ups of fully-nude buttocks” Images of nipples are not allowed too. But, users are allowed to “post photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding.Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too,” says Instagram.
Instagram also stated some safety reasons on why it would remove images that show nude or partially-nude children. Parents can check out the Tips for Parents page for further details.
Instagram has also asked users to follow the law, which means, offering sexual services, buying or selling illegal or prescription drugs (even if it’s legal in your region), as well as promoting recreational drug use is also not allowed. The guidelines also point out some rules for those who share important and newsworthy events. As Instagram sees users of various ages, they might remove videos of intense, graphic violence to make sure that the service stays appropriate for everyone.
Other guidelines included points out that users should respect other members of the Instagram community, foster meaningful and genuine interactions and maintain a supportive environment by not glorifying self-injury.
