Popular
photo and video sharing app Instagram has released a strong and
significant community guidelines to clarify some rules and regulations
and also give users a deeper insight on how it channelises content on
its site.
Instagram
states that they want to ‘continue to be an authentic and safe place
for inspiration and expression’. A report by Mashable points out that
Instagram, has had a particularly hard time dealing with female nudity.
As the old guidelines asked users to refrain from posting any form of
nudity on the site, the new guidelines allow a little more flexibility.
In
conversation with Wall Street Journal, Director of Public Policy for
Instagram Nicky Jackson Colaco said, “In the old guidelines, we would
say ‘don’t be mean’. Now we’re actively saying you can’t harass people.
The language is just stronger.”
Some
of the main controversial points cleared in the new regulation include:
Sharing photos or videos which are only taken by the user or has the
right to share. Instagram recommends not to not post anything which has
been copied or collected from the Internet or does not have the right to
post. Instagram also cleared the air about posting nude images to the
site.
Users
are not allowed to post “pictures or videos nor digitally-created
content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, close-ups of fully-nude
buttocks” Images of nipples are not allowed too. But, users are allowed
to “post photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively
breastfeeding.Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too,”
says Instagram.
Instagram
also stated some safety reasons on why it would remove images that show
nude or partially-nude children. Parents can check out the Tips for
Parents page for further details.
Instagram
has also asked users to follow the law, which means, offering sexual
services, buying or selling illegal or prescription drugs (even if it’s
legal in your region), as well as promoting recreational drug use is
also not allowed. The guidelines also point out some rules for those who
share important and newsworthy events. As Instagram sees users of
various ages, they might remove videos of intense, graphic violence to
make sure that the service stays appropriate for everyone.
Other
guidelines included points out that users should respect other members
of the Instagram community, foster meaningful and genuine interactions
and maintain a supportive environment by not glorifying self-injury.
