Chinese
manufacturer Xiaomi will take legal action against any unauthorized
online retailers or websites who try to sell their devices.
As
of now, the company has an ongoing patent dispute with Ericsson who has
claimed that Xiaomi is violating the Delhi High Court’s order by still
selling phones with the MediaTek-based chipsets via a website called
www.xiaomishop.com. Though, Xiaomi’s lawyers have refuted the claim
saying that the company has absolutely no stake in the website and in
fact some third party is misusing its name.
Manu
Jain, Head of India operations at Xiaomi told Times of India that,
“They’re infringing on trademarks and they’re making the world believe
that it’s a genuine Xiaomi site, which it is not.” He also added that,
“The products sold on these websites are not meant for India and are
sold at significantly higher price points.”
The
company plans to take legal action against xiaomishop.com site was
isn’t functional any more along with four to five other sites, which
were selling Xiaomi products illegally. Manu Jain also added that,
“We’re holding conversations with Fox-Conn and Inventec, who majorly
manufacture for us, to set up an assembly line in India.”
As
of now, Flipkart and Airtel are the only authorized Xiaomi sellers in
India. The company also has plans to sell smartphones through its own
portal in India. The company which currently sells devices in India
through homegrown eCommerce major Flipkart, will bring in its website
‘Mi.com’ to India in the latter part of the year.
Xiaomi
will also enter the US market with Mi.com and will sell earphones and
bands, as of now. The company also said it is close to securing a
manufacturing partner in Brazil, which will help it skirt punishing
tariffs on imported electronics when it begins sales in Latin America’s
largest economy in the first half of this year.
